Years ago, men use to be those in charge of the business world, however, there has been an increase in the number of female entrepreneurs in businesses such as fashion, aviation, farming, IT, mining, manufacturing, oil, and more.
This new development has broken the status quo where women were seen as weaker and incapable of being in areas such as the sciences.
These ambitious businesswomen are shaping Africa’s future by acting as mentors to millions of youths. These are some women that have defied all odds and are well recognized on the African continent.
1 . To begin with, BETHLEMEN TILAHUN ALEMU- ETHIOPIA
Bethlemen Tilahun Alemu is an Ethiopian businesswoman who was born and raised in Zenebework, a small, poverty-stricken rural community in Addis-Ababa, Ethiopia. She is the founder of SoleRebel, a footwear company that uses recycled tires in producing eco-friendly footwear for others.
The company was started in 2004 after Bethlemen resigned as an accountant to start her business. The community she grew up in had a lot of artisan skills and she wanted to change the narrative of her people.
The first two years of the company were quite challenging however, over the years, SoleRebels have grown to become a successful business venture with stores all over the world such as in London and New York.
Bethlemen has received a lot of praise because she empowers the Ethiopian youth to do better. Some other recognition she has received includes World’s 100 Most Powerful Women, 20 Youngest Power Women in Africa by Forbes, and Young Global Leaders by World Economic Forum.
2 . Secondly, DIVINE NDHLUKUKA – ZIMBABWE
Business : Security
Another is Divine Ndhlukuka. Divine Ndhlukuka is the founder of Zimbabwe’s registered security company, SECURICO. She started this business with a number of 3 employees but currently has a large team of more than 3500 employees.
3 . Thirdly, Folorunsho Alakija – Nigeria
Business: oil and gas
Folorunsho Alakija is a Nigerian philanthropist and billionaire who earned this status all by herself. She has been a secretary before becoming a banker, switched to the fashion world, and now reigning in the oil sector.
Folorunsho has been using her skill in the fashion world to promote her country Nigeria. After her success in the fashion world, she obtained an oil license and that is how she started FamfaOil limited.
4 . Next is ISABEL DO SANTOS
Isabel is one wealthy businesswoman in Africa. She started her business by using her entire savings in opening an expensive nightclub in Luanda and a tracking company to deliver goods to her. Isabel has been in the minerals, oil, banking, as well as oil industry.
5 . Last but not least, SIBONGILE SAMBO – SOUTH AFRICA
Sibongile established SRS Aviation which is the first black female-owned aviation company in South Africa. She started this business after she was rejected by South Africa Airways because of her height.
Since then, she has been doing well, the business SRS Aviation has been offering charter services in different categories. These categories include cargo, charter and VIP charter, medical evacuation services, game count and capture, and more.
She has won awards like the Top Emerging Gender Empowered Company award, Reginal Business Women of the Year award, and the Black Women in Business award.
There are other prominent and promising female entrepreneurs Adenike Ogunlesi, Carmen Tal, Khanyi Dhlomo, Bridgette Radebe, Hajia Bola Shagaya, Njeri Rionge, Yasmin Belo-Osagie, as well as Afua Osei.
