THE SEED OF FAILURE
Scripture Reading: Genesis 49:1-4
UNSTABLE AS WATER, YOU SHALL NOT EXCEL, BECAUSE YOU WENT UP TO YOUR FATHER’S. BED; THEN YOU DEFILED IT – HE WENT UP TO MY COUCH. – GENESIS 49:4
Jacob’s verdict on Reuben is a stark reminder of how one act of moral failure can derail your entire journey in life.
The biblical roll call of people who made unacceptable moral choices includes names like David, Samson and Amnon. Reuben found himself on this unenviable list and ended up paying a very high price.
The blessing of the first born, including the double portion of the inheritance, is a really important aspect of Jewish culture. It was also customary for patriarchs to speak into the lives of their children and bless them individually.
At a time when Reuben was due to receive these blessings from his dying father, he was reminded of a bizarre act he committed years earlier of sleeping with his father’s concubine Bilhah. At the time he committed the abomination in Genesis 35:22, Jacob, his father, heard about it but did not comment.
Sometimes, silence is misconstrued as approval of wrongdoing or an indication that the offence was not very serious. This can be highly erroneous, as Reuben painfully realised.
Several years later, at a time when he was slated for his greatest glory, he was dismissed as an immoral and unstable man who would not excel.
How painful! Proverbs 14:12, says, “There is a way that seems right to a man, but it’s end is the way of death.” Determine to avoid sowing any seed that can grow to become an unwanted tree in your life.
FATHER, STRENGTHEN ME AND KEEP ME ON THE STRAIGHT AND NARROW ROAD THAT LEADS TO LIFE.
